Vortex Reference, ironically enough, is the furthest thing from neutral or reference kind of sound! However don't let colour scare you away. Vortex meant Reference in the sense that this IEM is completely transparent to changes in cables - so much so that they actually provide 2 cables in its packaging (Titan and Iris). They are that confident.
The Vortex Reference has a V-shaped type type of sound, with its upper mids and lower treble tucked behind. This results in a spatial presentation that highlights bass and treble first, with vocals and midrange sitting further back. What makes this unique is that the soundstage is some of the widest, with Left and Right panning so wide that cymbals and synths are completely separated with great distance from the bass and mids in the center channel. Since the vocals are further back, there is a perception that the stage is really deep. The Vortex also exhibits what we call “Blackground” - a stark, inky black background that makes transients seem to form out of thin air.
The magic sauce behind this IEM is really its bass. It’s thick, heavy laden, large in quantity, but somehow doesn’t feel bloated or bleedy. Theres a paradoxical liquid feel to its body, but yet rigid and tight so it never overhangs or bleeds. A masterpiece that you must get the chance to really appreciate how the tuner has balanced colour with staging, technical ability and texture.
